Home > Tours from Riga > Hill of Crosses Tour

We offer you tour to Northern Lithuania to show you a special place, one of a kind in whole world. We will head south from Riga toward border with Lithuania. During the ride you will be discovering Latvian countryside and drive through Jelgava – students' city of Latvia. After approx 2 hours drive we will reach the Hill of Crosses in Lithuania. More than 100 000 crosses stand here today on this one single hill. It is very important religious site for all Lithuanian Catholics visited by Pope John Paul II in 1993 who declared it a place for hope, peace, love and sacrifice. Probably it all started between 2 unsuccessful Polish-Lithuanian uprisings against Russian authorities in 1831 and 1863. It is believed that some local families who could not find bodies of their members who took part in the battles, started to put some crosses on this hill. Over the decades this place became famous for numerous crosses and people from all over the country visited the hill to put their own cross for individual reasons. Today you can also put your cross here as it is fully allowed for everybody who wants to do it. Before coming back to Riga, we will also visit a city of Siauliau – forth biggest in Lithuania.
