Due to the almost 50 years of Russian Soviet occupation, communist buildings are inseparable part of Riga's architecture. During our tour you can find out more about this dark period of history and see most interesting sites in Riga related with this subject.
We will start our tour with visiting the building of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, also known as Stalin’s Birthday Cake, which resembles of 'Seven Sisters', the stalinist skyscrapers in other Eastern European cities. It was the first skyscraper built in Latvia, 108 meters high. We will go up to its platform to admire breathtaking views of Riga. Then we will walk towards the Old Town where on the largest square of the city we will find the Occupation Museum of Latvia. It tells the story of Latvia’s recent history- from the Russian Soviet and German Nazi occupations during World War 2 until the Latvian independence in 1991. Our next stop will be the Freedom Monument, major landmark and symbol of Latvian independence. Crossing the river we will reach the Soviet Victory Monument- the biggest occupation era monument in Latvia, almost 80 meters high, which symbolizes the victory over Nazi Germany. At the end of the tour we will head south to the highest structure in the whole European Union- higher even than Berlin TV Tower and Paris Eiffel Tower! Riga Radio and TV Tower, funded by Soviet Union central government, dominates over the city. Somewhere on the way we can also stop for a cup of tea in Leningrad cafe.
